The Journey

A single grand loop through the Pearl of Africa: the Shoebill swamps of Lake Victoria, the Victoria Nile at Murchison Falls, the legendary forest trails of Budongo and the Royal Mile, the rainforest of Kibale, the game-rich savannahs of Queen Elizabeth, and the Albertine Rift endemics of Bwindi — with chimpanzee tracking at Kibale and a permitted hour with mountain gorillas at Bwindi woven into the birding.

Uganda packs more of Africa into one country than anywhere else on the continent: Shoebills poling distance away in the papyrus, the thunder of the Nile at Murchison, West African forest birds along the Royal Mile, savannah game beneath the Rwenzoris, and the mist-hung Albertine Rift forests where mountain gorillas and 23 endemic birds share the same slopes. This seventeen-day loop is built to see it whole — over 500 species within reach — and to place the two great primate encounters, chimpanzees at Kibale and gorillas at Bwindi, at the heart of the birding rather than to one side of it.

Road journeyDestination

The route stays within Uganda, moving north through the central corridor before following the Albertine Rift forests and parks south to Bwindi and Lake Mburo.

July figures are practical planning ranges, not forecasts. Conditions change with elevation: Nile and Rift Valley days are warmer, while Bwindi and Ruhija mornings can be distinctly cool.

22 June

Arrival in Entebbe

We arrive on the northern shores of Lake Victoria, virtually on the Equator, and are met at the airport and transferred to our hotel. Guests in early can bird the Entebbe Botanical Gardens in the afternoon — forty hectares of tropical planting that hold over 200 species and our first weavers, turacos and sunbirds.

Mabamba Swamp — Transfer to Murchison Falls

Before dawn we drive to the Mabamba wetland, a papyrus labyrinth on Lake Victoria protected by its local community, and pole out by dugout canoe in search of the prehistoric Shoebill — perhaps Africa's most wanted bird. The channels teem with Pink-backed Pelican, Malachite Kingfisher and Papyrus Gonolek. After lunch we head north to Murchison Falls, Uganda's largest national park, birding woodland edges along the way as the country opens out toward the Nile.

Murchison Falls National Park

A full day exploring the park. A morning game drive across the Borassus grassland for elephant, giraffe, buffalo and lion, then an afternoon launch down the Victoria Nile toward the Lake Albert delta — another chance at Shoebill amid Goliath Heron, Saddle-billed Stork, Red-throated Bee-eater and African Skimmer. Park fees are included in the lodge stay.

Murchison Falls — Transfer to Budongo

Morning activities in the park before an afternoon transfer south to the Budongo Forest area, the largest natural forest in East Africa. West African forest species begin to appear — hornbills, malimbes and jewelled kingfishers along the edges — as we settle in at Masindi.

Budongo Forest — the Royal Mile

A full day on the Royal Mile, one of Africa's legendary forest trails, where the forest has been cut back a few metres along the track to give rare open views into canopy and understorey. We work slowly for Nahan's Francolin, African Dwarf and Chocolate-backed Kingfishers, greenbuls, illadopsis and spinetails soaring over the clearings — one of Uganda's premier forest birding sites.

Budongo — Transfer to Kibale

Morning birding in Budongo Forest before a scenic drive south to Fort Portal and Kibale, the loveliest tract of rainforest in Uganda and home to thirteen primate species. We settle into the forest edge with the Rwenzoris on the horizon, birding the approach roads for our first montane specials.

Kibale National Park — Chimpanzee Trek

After briefing at Kanyanchu we track Kibale's habituated chimpanzees — Uganda's largest population, some 1,450 animals — through the forest for an unforgettable permitted hour. An optional afternoon birding walk or forest walk rounds out the day.

Kibale — Queen Elizabeth National Park

Morning birding in Kibale — a chance at the community-run Bigodi Wetland, rich in Great Blue Turaco and papyrus specials — before we descend to Queen Elizabeth, Uganda's most bird-rich park with over 600 species recorded and a single-day record of 296.

Queen Elizabeth NP — Kazinga Channel

A morning game drive on the Kasenyi plains for lion, elephant and Uganda Kob against the Rwenzori backdrop, followed by an afternoon launch on the Kazinga Channel that drifts past hippo and buffalo and one of the greatest concentrations of waterbirds anywhere in Africa.

Ishasha — Transfer to Bwindi

South to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — voted the number-one birding site in Africa — birding through the Ishasha sector in search of its famous tree-climbing lions. An afternoon on the self-guided Munyaga trail introduces us to the forest and its 23 highly localised Albertine Rift endemics.

Bwindi — Gorilla Trekking

The day many have waited a lifetime for. After briefing at park headquarters we trek into the Impenetrable Forest to spend a permitted hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family — an encounter, eye to eye, that no one forgets. A reasonable degree of fitness is required; the afternoon is at leisure.

Transfer to Ruhija

We climb to the cool Ruhija sector at 2,350 m, the heart of Bwindi for Albertine Rift endemics, birding the road up through the forest as the country cools and the mist rolls in.

A full-day birding excursion to Mubwindi Swamp, a highlight for Albertine Rift endemics and our best shot at the coveted African Green Broadbill, with Grauer's Warbler, Regal and Blue-headed Sunbirds, Handsome Francolin and a chance of Shelley's Crimsonwing.

Transfer to Lake Mburo

A long, scenic transfer east to Lake Mburo, the smallest and most intimate of the savannah parks — rolling acacia country and open valleys with zebra, eland, impala and topi found nowhere else on the route.

Lake Mburo — Game Drive, Boat & Night Drive

A morning game drive through acacia savannah for zebra, eland and topi and their attendant birds, followed by an afternoon boat on the lake for African Finfoot, Great White Egret, Papyrus Gonolek and basking hippo and crocodile. After dinner we head out on a night drive for nocturnal species.

Fee includes

All accommodation, all meals in the field, ground transportation in a private 4×4 safari vehicle, park entrance and activity fees, boat launches, the mountain gorilla and chimpanzee tracking permits, and the services of your expert birding leader and local guides — including gratuities for the local guiding team.

International airfares, travel insurance, visas, and personal expenses.
