Custom tours

Begin with a possibility.

Hummingbirds in Colombia. Cranes in Japan. Lemurs in Madagascar. Penguins in Patagonia. Or somewhere you've always imagined.

Ecotone Journeys creates nature-focused travel for individuals, couples, families, photography groups, bird clubs and small groups of friends. We work with an outstanding worldwide network of local naturalists and guides to balance exceptional wildlife, meaningful cultural experiences, comfortable travel and memorable places to stay.

Every itinerary is personally designed and reviewed by us.

Whether you're an avid birder or someone who enjoys being immersed in beautiful places, we'll build the trip around what matters to you.

02

Our approach

More than a list. A way of paying attention.

We believe the best journeys aren't measured by the number of species seen, but by the quality of the experience.

Excellent wildlife viewing matters. So does time to appreciate landscapes, local communities, food and the unexpected moments that often become a trip's highlights. Small groups, knowledgeable local guides and flexibility let us make the most of changing conditions while keeping the experience relaxed and enjoyable.

03

Designed around you

The details shape the experience.

Lodging

Location, comfort and character

We tailor accommodations to your travel style and budget, from charming locally owned and nature lodges to boutique hotels, historic inns, eco-lodges and luxury properties where available.

Staying close to the wildlife often creates a richer experience than a larger city hotel, so star ratings are never our only measure.

Target species

Honest about what is possible

Share the birds, mammals, reptiles, butterflies, plants or other wildlife you've dreamed of seeing. We'll use local knowledge, season and habitat to maximize your chances—while being candid about species that are extremely rare, unpredictable or strictly nocturnal.

Pace of travel

Enough time to truly be there

Most itineraries favor two-night stays, with occasional one-night stops where needed and three nights in especially rewarding places. We avoid packing every day while still connecting the best wildlife areas efficiently.

Driving distances

Travel is part of the adventure

Most driving days average two to four hours, though some regions require five to seven hours or more. Roads, weather, construction, border crossings and local traffic vary; the remarkable habitats at the end are usually well worth the drive.

04

Planning timeline

From first thought to detailed proposal.

≈ 30 days

Because every itinerary is created from scratch, please allow approximately 30 days for us to develop a detailed proposal. If your trip is within the next six months, tell us—when time is limited, we'll do our best to expedite the planning process.

05

Fees & group size

A transparent sliding scale.

Custom tour fees are quoted per person, based on double occupancy. The exact fee reflects your destination, trip length, season, lodging, permits, internal travel and guide requirements.

Because guide, vehicle and planning costs are shared, the per-person fee generally becomes lower as your group grows. Your proposal will show the exact price at each practical group size before you make a commitment.

TravelersPer-person fee
1Fully private journey · highest per-person fee
2Guide and vehicle costs shared between two travelers
3–4Shared trip costs bring the per-person fee down further
5–8Lowest per-person fee while keeping the group intentionally small

Final proposals list exactly what is included and excluded. Private rooms may carry a single supplement; international airfare, insurance and personal expenses are normally separate unless your proposal says otherwise.

Why travel with Ecotone Journeys?

Life gathers at the edge.

Ecotone Journeys grew from a lifetime spent learning where wildlife is richest: where habitats meet, forests give way to wetlands, mountains descend into valleys and dawn fills the landscape with birdsong.

An ecotone is the transition between two ecosystems—a place of extraordinary diversity and abundance. These places inspired our name and continue to shape the way we travel.

Every journey is personally led or carefully designed with exceptional local naturalists who know their landscapes intimately. Intentionally small groups let us move quietly, adapt to changing conditions, linger when wildlife appears and make genuine connections with nature and the people who call these places home.

The finest journeys leave you with more than memorable sightings: they deepen your understanding of the landscapes, cultures and ecological relationships that make each destination unique.

From the field

Stories worth bringing home.

Reflections from the road—remarkable places, memorable wildlife, conservation, local culture and why we choose the destinations we offer. There's no publishing schedule to keep; when there's something worth sharing, you'll find it here.
