Portugal — Alentejo, Tagus & the Atlantic

In May, the Alentejo is still touched with spring green and its rolling plains are scattered with poppies and rockroses. Great Bustards display in the open country, Montagu’s Harriers quarter the fields and Bee-eaters flash over old farm walls. Cork-oak estates bring their own cast of woodland birds, while the Tagus estuary and Atlantic headlands add flamingos, waders, terns and the possibility of late northbound migrants.

Otter, mongoose and Iberian hare share these landscapes, and the plant life gives the quieter hours just as much texture as the headline birds. Portugal’s natural and cultural histories sit comfortably together: whitewashed towns, medieval castles, Roman traces and an unhurried table shaped by olive groves and the sea.
