The Journey

An extraordinary birding adventure from Auckland to Stewart Island — island sanctuaries, alpine country, pelagic seas and nocturnal kiwi, followed by time to enjoy Christchurch's city, Botanic Gardens and museums.

From Auckland we travel the length of Aotearoa, linking predator-free island sanctuaries, ancient forest, estuaries, mountains and rich southern seas. The route is designed around New Zealand’s singular endemic birds: kokako and kaka in the north, kea and braided-river specialists in the South Island, and the remarkable flightless takahē. On wild Stewart Island, we search for tokoeka as the forest settles into evening.

After the southern adventure, we finish with breathing room in Christchurch — a spectacular end to the trip. There will be time to explore the rebuilt city at an easy pace, wander the Botanic Gardens along the Avon and choose from its excellent museums before the journey home. The full route and dates are being finalised; register your interest and we will contact you personally when registration opens.
