Madagascar — Birds, Lemurs & Wild Landscapes
register your interestThe Journey
Designed for travellers who want serious birding and memorable mammal encounters without losing the larger story of Madagascar's landscapes, this journey moves through a succession of distinct ecological communities. We begin among Ankarafantsika's lakes and dry forest, cross the humid eastern escarpment, follow the highlands south to bamboo-rich Ranomafana and finish in the surreal thorn forests and coastal wetlands of the southwest.
The route · Antananarivo → Ankarafantsika → Andasibe, Maromizaha & Mantadia → Antsirabe → Ranomafana → Anja → Isalo → Zombitse → Belalanda Lakes → Ifaty → Sarodrano Bay & Toliara ⇢ Antananarivo
Route and rhythm
Days 1–5 pair Antananarivo with two full days in Ankarafantsika’s northwestern dry forest and wetlands. Days 6–9 move into the community forest, mid-elevation rainforest and nocturnal life of Andasibe-Mantadia. Days 10–14 cross the Central Highlands to bamboo-rich Ranomafana and the sandstone landscapes of Isalo. The final four days connect Zombitse, Ifaty, Sarodrano and Tsarasaotra before departure.
Field conditions
Madagascar rewards patience and flexibility. Travel days can be long, and road conditions may change quickly. Rainforest trails can be steep, muddy, rooty and slippery; dry-forest and spiny-forest trails are usually flatter but can be hot, sandy, dusty and thorny. A walking pole, sturdy footwear, sun protection, rain gear and a small daypack are strongly recommended.
Planning note
The day-by-day program, domestic flight timing, lodge assignments and reserve access remain subject to final confirmation. Wildlife is never guaranteed; target lists are a field strategy, not a checklist promise. October temperatures are rounded historical norms rather than forecasts and can vary substantially with elevation, wind, cloud and rainfall.
Water and comfort stops
The team carries drinking water during scheduled field activities and overland travel; guests should bring a reusable bottle of about one litre and keep it accessible. On driving days, the guide and driver schedule reasonable bathroom stops wherever facilities are available. In remote areas facilities may be basic, so carry personal tissue, hand sanitiser and a sealable waste bag. Do not assume room tap water is safe to drink; use sealed bottled, boiled or properly treated water whenever safety is uncertain.
