Japan in Winter — Cranes, Eagles & Snow Country
register your interestThe Journey
Winter birding from Kyushu to Hokkaido — great gatherings of Hooded and White-naped Cranes in the south, Red-crowned Cranes dancing on snow, and Steller's Sea Eagles along the frozen northern coast.
We begin in Kyushu, where thousands of Hooded and White-naped Cranes gather on their wintering grounds. Nearby wetlands and coasts add spoonbills, gulls, waterfowl and raptors before we fly north into Hokkaido’s deep winter.
Here Red-crowned Cranes dance against the snow, immense Steller’s Sea Eagles concentrate along the icebound coast, and White-tailed Eagles patrol frozen rivers. Quiet forests offer the possibility of Blakiston’s Fish Owl and other northern specialists, with Japan’s winter landscapes and food culture woven through the journey.
