Bulgaria — Rhodopes, Wetlands & the Black Sea
register your interestThe Journey
Spring across Bulgaria's wildest edges — vultures riding the thermals over the Rhodope Mountains, pelicans and herons in the Danube wetlands, and a surge of migration along the Black Sea coast, with orchids, butterflies and old-world villages woven into the journey.
May finds Bulgaria green, bright and alive with movement. In the Eastern Rhodopes, Griffon and Egyptian Vultures rise from sun-warmed cliffs while tortoises move through flower-rich grassland below. Wetlands along the Danube hold pelicans, herons and marsh terns, and the Black Sea coast gathers northbound migrants into scrub, lagoons and oak woodland.
The wider wildlife is every bit as absorbing: sousliks on the steppe, butterflies and orchids in the meadows, and the possibility of Golden Jackal at the quiet ends of the day. Between birding sessions there is time for Bulgaria’s human landscape too — stone villages, Orthodox monasteries, Thracian history and the warm, seasonal food of the countryside.
